Internet Marketing - How To Get More Money Out Of Your Website

    October 21st, 2008 by admin

I regularly get emails from business people and budding internet marketers who have sites and are not making any money out of them. Sometimes these sites are of very poor quality. Usually, it’s not the quality of the site, but the marketing strategy–or lack thereof–that is the problem.

I looked at a great site the other day for someone. I don’t want to give away their niche, so I’m going to say it was in the exercise equipment field. It wasn’t, but that won’t hurt the example.

They had a beautiful site! Pleasing background colors made it easy to look at. They had a range of products they were selling. Plus a page for articles and a blog so they could get juice from Google, long-tail searches.

There was the requisite About Us page that was very impressive, with all of their accomplishments and accolades.

They had their address and their contact number, for anyone who wanted to buy their personal training services. They even were coming out with a number of information products so they could expand their business beyond their geographic area.

I could easily see why they weren’t making a lot of money from their site. (I would be surprised if they were making any!)

All of their content can be classified as “brand” advertising. Madison Avenue.

Claude Hopkins, the father of direct mail advertising, said it best–it’s like they’re standing on a street corner crying “Give me your money! Not that other guy! I’m better!”

That’s brand advertising in a nutshell–designed to be memorable, it usually just gets lost in the chaos of information we all have to deal with.

This site, and all the others like it, need a radical shift in marketing philosophy.

Instead of talking at their potential buyers, they need to get in their prospects’ heads, find out their itches and scratch them.

Really, no one cares how much money you made last year! No one cares if you won an award for being the best personal trainer in So and So city!

Burn this into the inside of your eyelids, so you never forget it…No one cares about you! Period!

People only care about themselves. (This is not a character flaw, by the way.)

What my exercise webmaster needs to do is to

    • build a list
    • create a conversation with the members of their list
    • then focus on giving these folks what they really want
